What risks and consequences follow from a changing climate? How are Sweden’s municipalities working to protect against cloudbursts, flooding, and landslides?
Welcome to an evening on climate adaptation – on the work of municipalities, what it means for design and urban planning, and the radical solutions that may be needed.

Our cities are vulnerable in a changing climate. They are often densely built, with large paved areas where water cannot seep into the ground. What will municipalities need to do to meet a warmer and wetter future? Is preparedness enough?

The evening begins with architect Ulf Mejergren presenting the Lift House, a radical response to climate adaptation. This is followed by a panel discussion where four experts reflect on conflicting goals, design, and good examples.

During the evening, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase at Torget via Swish.

Panel:

  • Sofie Storbjörk, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, Linköping University
  • Paula Mackenzie, Landscape Architect and Partner, White Arkitekter
  • Ann-Sofie Eriksson, Head of Section for Planning, Safety and Environment, SKR (Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions)
  • Henrik Storm, City Architect, Municipality of Värnamo
  • Moderator: Kris Johnson-Jones, Senior strategist at ArkDes

Prepared

From 17 October to 2 November, ArkDes presents Prepared – a programme series on preparedness, climate adaptation, and resilient urban planning. At Torget, visitors will encounter the Lift House, a temporary installation designed by Ulf Mejergren Architects ↗, drawing on research into climate adaptation from Linköping University. Visitors can explore the Lift House on Torget during regular opening hours from 15 October, even outside the program events.
