How can design contribute to a more sustainable textile industry? At this Design Bar, you will meet designers, researchers and journalists working towards a more circular textile industry.
The textile industry has long been associated with major environmental challenges and today accounts for an estimated 8–10 per cent of global carbon emissions. At the same time, the industry is developing new solutions, including innovative materials and water purification methods, and the second-hand market continues to grow. Despite these developments, globalised supply chains and rapid e-commerce continue to flood the market with inexpensive textile products.
This Design Bar brings together researchers, textile designers and journalists to discuss possible futures for the textile industry. Together, we explore the latest research and how it is being translated into practice, while delving into questions such as: How are designers contributing to more circular material flows? What barriers remain to creating a more sustainable textile sector? And how do companies, marketing and influencers shape our perceptions of what is new and desirable?
