On the occasion of the Woodland Cemetery’s (Skogskyrkogården) 100th anniversary in 2020, the City of Stockholm announced an international design competition in 2018 for new seating for the cemetery’s unique landscape.
The winners were studio näv, Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen, and the furniture manufacturer Artek. Together, they developed a bench and a stool in cork and steel, the result of approximately five years of work. Despite winning the competition, the project was halted, and the furniture was never installed on site.
In this Unboxing, we unpack the sketching process behind the furniture and follow how its form evolved. Together with the architects, we explore the design work, present original drawings from the museum’s collection, and view photographs of the furniture by photographer Mikael Olsson.
