ArkDes

Mandate and vision

Stadsbiblioteket, Stockholm. 1921. Gunnar Asplund. ArkDes collection.

ArkDes is more than a traditional museum; it is a dynamic arena where the public can engage in reflection and debate and influence the role of design and architecture in society. In our exhibitions at Skeppsholmen, visitors of all ages are invited to explore architecture and design in various forms, ranging from large-scale installations to intricate sketches and interactive works in the public realm.

ArkDes is dedicated to fostering new knowledge through our research environment. Our research has in two parts. The first is funding and carrying out practice-based research projects in cities and communities across Sweden. The second in commissioning and undertaking resaerch to enhance understanding of the museum’s very large collection.

ArkDes is a place not only for the general public, but also for professionals involved in building cities to meet and talk about their field. Through conferences, reports and meetings, ArkDes broadens perspectives and provide fresh insights into what architecture and design are and could be.
