Unboxing: Europe’s Market Hall of the Future

Söderhallarna, Stockholm. 1992. Architect: Bo Kjessel. Photographer: Max Plunger. ArkDes collection.

Söderhallarna in central Stockholm has been closed for renovation for three years. Behind closed doors, work has been in full progress. When the market hall opened in 1992, it was presented as a glimpse of the future – described as Europe’s most modern market hall, with restaurants, offices and a cinema gathered under one roof. The question now is what awaits when the building reopens.

Together with Morten Johansson from the architecture office Dinelljohansson, who is leading the renovation, we unbox original drawings from the museum’s collection. The reopening is planned for the Christmas shopping season in 2026. But already now, we are removing the wrapping paper and looking at what Christmas has in store.

The conversation is led by curators Frida Rosenberg and Max Ahrent.
