Tone Hansen appointed new Museum Director of Moderna Museet

We are delighted to welcome Tone Hansen as the new Museum Director of Moderna Museet from 1 September 2026. The Minister for Culture, Parisa Liljestrand, announced the museum’s new Museum Director at a press conference on Monday 8 June 2026. Tone Hansen will take up her position on 1 September 2026.

Most recently, Tone Hansen served as Director of MUNCH ↗ in Oslo. Prior to that, she led Henie Onstad Kunstsenter ↗. She brings extensive experience in museum development, strategic leadership and in strengthening the role of art institutions in society.

– I approach this appointment with both pride and humility. My ambition is to shape a new direction for Moderna Museet and to build a stronger, more innovative and knowledge-driven organisation within one of the world’s most influential museums, with art, architecture, design and audiences at its heart, says Tone Hansen.

On 31 August 2026, Gitte Ørskou will step down as Museum Director of Moderna Museet. Since January 2026, Moderna Museet, ArkDes and the Public Art Agency have formed a single government agency under the name Moderna Museet.
