Large-scale green industrial investments are transforming Norrbotten and Västerbotten. What does this mean for people, places, and culture? What narratives will this societal transition create, and what visions shape the future living environments in Kiruna, Gällivare, Boden, Luleå, Skellefteå, and Umeå?

Authorities within the Council for Sustainable Cities, in collaboration with the six municipalities, invited stakeholders to contribute conceptual sketches reflecting each municipality’s unique conditions and processes. In late 2021, cross-sectoral teams with artistic ambition were encouraged to express interest. The response was overwhelming, with 55 applications received.

Part of the EU initiative New European Bauhaus, Visions: in the North seeks to inspire architects, designers, engineers, creatives, artists, researchers, students, and others to tackle the challenge of creating beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive living environments.

This report presents the conceptual sketches developed in response to municipal challenges, aiming to generate future scenarios and visions that support municipalities in creating sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetically pleasing environments. The sketches also foster collaboration among multidisciplinary teams to contribute to holistic societal development. Additionally, the report outlines the structure, execution, and conclusions of Visions: i norr.
