Open call: Reimagining Landscapes

How can industrial landscapes become sustainable environments for the future? ArkDes invites interdisciplinary teams to carry out pre-studies within Reimagining Landscapes. The call explores how design can transform industrial environments that are no longer in use or are being decommissioned.

The call seeks proposals for site-specific pre-studies in which teams define their own research questions, methods and content. The aim is to develop knowledge on how industrial landscapes in transition can take on new roles in future societies. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of design in working with existing conditions and the specific qualities of each site. The results should be of national relevance and applicable to other locations across Sweden facing similar challenges.

The pre-studies should explore methods, design principles and future scenarios for the sustainable transformation of industrial landscapes. This may include mines, quarries, ports, industrial sites or other environments that have long been inaccessible to the public and have created barriers within the landscape. The call provides an opportunity to explore how landscapes can be developed and given new roles through spatial strategies and design.

The call will fund three pre-studies, each with a research grant of SEK 300,000.

Reimagining Landscapes is part of ArkDes’ research area Transformation and contributes to a broader focus on landscape architecture. Previous practice-based research projects within the research area include VERKET and RE:purpose.

Practice-based research on ArkDes

ArkDes carries out practice-based research through targeted calls, where interdisciplinary teams test and develop methods within architecture, design and the built environment. The work takes place in dialogue with municipalities, regions, academia, industry and local stakeholders. The approach is grounded in design and exploratory design processes, where theory is translated into practice.
