ArkDes is one of 25 museums shortlisted for the international sustainability award ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practice in Museums. The nomination is based on ArkDes’ work to renew the museum in a sustainable way between 2020 and 2024. ArkDes is the only Swedish museum on the list, selected from 130 nominated projects across 60 countries.

“It’s wonderful to see a Swedish museum shortlisted for this newly established international award. The renewal work at ArkDes is an inspiring example of how sustainability and the museum’s mission can go hand in hand. It is also a significant recognition to be acknowledged by the museum community itself as a model for sustainable practice,” says Helena Westin, Chair of ICOM Sweden.

“I am both proud and delighted that ArkDes, as the only museum from Sweden, is included on the shortlist for ICOM’s new award. We have worked intensively to reuse existing materials in our exhibitions and repurpose them thoughtfully, while keeping the collections at the centre. Reuse is present both in the walls and in the stories we tell,” says Acting Director Karin Nilsson, ArkDes.

The award is presented by ICOM, the International Council of Museums, and is the first international prize to recognise innovative initiatives and exemplary practices that contribute meaningfully to sustainable development within the museum sector.
The winning museum will be announced at the ICOM Conference in Dubai in November. Read more about the award here: Reshaping sustainable development practice in museums – International Council of Museums – International Council of Museums.
