The project Värm med spill och vattna med sol explored how unused urban spaces and resources can be transformed to create sustainable systems for food production and efficient energy use.
The rapid urbanization of cities presents major challenges, especially regarding the transition to sustainable energy systems and food consumption. The project Värm med spill och vattna med sol (Heat with Waste, Water with Sun) was part of ArkDes Open Call 2019. By utilizing unused rooftop spaces, waste heat, and solar energy, the project aimed to find solutions to address these needs.
In collaboration with architects Emma Nilsson, Daniel Lindberg (Blick arkitektur ↗) , and Kristin Borg, biologist Björn Oliviusson (Svensk Aquaponik ↗), and sustainability expert Michel Van Noord (Esam ↗), proposals were developed for three rooftops in Stockholm – on Östermalm, in Högdalen, and in Slakthusområdet. These included ideas for aquaponic systems for large-scale cultivation and solar panels to maximize energy production. The proposals were carefully adapted to suit both the architectural character and the social values of the existing urban environment. Read the report to learn more about the developed solutions and their potential to contribute to sustainable cities of the future.
