The Unikt Publikt project aimed to demonstrate how public spaces can become more accessible and inclusive for everyone. By involving people with disabilities in the design process, four solutions were developed for three central locations in Gothenburg: Lejontrappan, Järntorget, and Drottningtorget.
Unikt Publikt (Uniquely Public), a collaboration between ArkDes and GIL (Göteborgskooperativet för Independent Living) ↗, sought to show how we can create a better city for all by placing users’ needs at the center. Four teams, consisting of designers and people with various disabilities, worked together to develop solutions for three important sites in Gothenburg. At Lejontrappan, a ramp was proposed to replace the stairs, creating a more inclusive meeting place. For Järntorget, a smooth square surface with new benches was designed to be accessible for both wheelchair users and pedestrians. Drottningtorget was given a new structure with clear contrasts and markings to assist people with visual impairments.
The project is summarized in a report that showcases practical ways to transform public spaces to improve both function and social inclusion.
