Open Call 2019

ArkDes is launching a call for proposals worth one million SEK to promote practice-based research in architecture, design, and planning. The call is aimed at architects, designers, researchers, interior architects, artists, urban planners, and landscape architects who want to develop an idea.

The background for this call is a recurring request from both practicing architects and individuals working in public or nonprofit sectors for the need to delve deeper into specific issues. For many, especially smaller offices, there is not enough financial room to conduct such studies.

The aim of this call is to facilitate practice-based, investigative projects that address challenges and questions related to the cities of today and the future. The projects should align with the goals outlined in the Policy for Designed Living Environment (Prop. 2017/18:110).

The target group for this Open Call is professionals in the fields of architecture, design, and planning in Sweden. The projects must be a collaboration between at least two parties. Participants can include architects, designers, researchers, interior architects, artists, urban planners, or landscape architects. These professionals can be freelancers, work in private enterprises, with a building contractor, in a municipality, in academia, or for a nonprofit organization.

  • The call is open only to professionals residing in Sweden.
  • Applications cannot be submitted by individuals.
  • The project must be a collaboration between two parties, such as an architect and a researcher, or a designer and a producer.
  • ArkDes aims to support those whose work focuses on issues related to our designed living environment: sustainability, equality, participation, quality in public spaces, and segregation.
  • ArkDes prioritizes those who want to drive and initiate projects that develop architecture, design, and form. ArkDes prioritizes those who have identified socially beneficial exploratory design work.
  • The focus is on practice-based investigative projects in Sweden that aim to explore a question and generate new knowledge.
  • The final format can vary but must be specified in the application: a publication, film, full-scale model, digital exhibition, etc.
  • The total funding for the call is 1 million SEK, to be distributed across 4-6 projects.
  • Funding is provided to the team to carry out the project at their respective workplaces.
  • ArkDes does not provide workspace or equipment.
  • The project should be feasible to conduct within 3-6 months.
  • Open Call: January 29 – March 17, 2019
  • Application Deadline: March 17, 2019
  • Decision by ArkDes (internal reference group): By March 31, 2019
  • Project Completion Deadline: November 1, 2019
  • Seminar on Results and Experiences: November 2019

The internal working group at ArkDes reviews the applications and makes an initial selection based on the selection criteria, then the advisory group at ArkDes, which comprises experts with various specializations and interests, is consulted.

ArkDes contacts the applicants who are shortlisted for interviews and all applicants will be invited to a seminar on results and experiences to be held in November.

Applications are to be submitted via email to hej.thinktank@arkdes.se with the following documents:

  1. A project description (maximum two A4 pages) detailing what you want to explore, who will participate in the project, the methodology, and the final outcome. The description must include a budget for the project.
  2. Between 1–4 references of previous projects and assignments, which can be images, publications, films, or other digital media.
  3. CVs of the participating individuals.

Applications must be submitted in Swedish, but references can be in English.

Submitted files should be saved with the applicant’s name/organization at the beginning of the file name, for example, lisa_karlsson_ansokan.doc.

Applications must be received by ArkDes no later than 11:59 PM on March 17, 2019.
