Long before terms like ‘climate smart’ and ‘sustainable development’ become of common use, the quest of architects to build in a more sustainable way has started. In this area, you can find examples of the attempts made by architects to improve the relation between architecture and nature, to test more sensitive construction materials, or to respond to existing conditions with types of reuse.

Already in the 1970s, office buildings are constructed in a way that uses the surplus heat from computers and converts it into energy. ‘Nature houses’ with recycling systems for self-sufficiency appear, and here at Skeppsholmen, the exhibition Ararat proposes straw houses, self-building, and furniture made of driftwood.
