City Compass

Explore digitised objects from the ArkDes collection, with a focus on the 2024–2025 exhibition period and the theme City Compass.

After sketching, the next step for architects and designers is to give shape to their ideas. In this area you can find examples of how architecture is built, from the construction detail of how a window meets the floor, to how a façade becomes a landmark in the city. The creativity may lie in the façade itself, as in a high-rise where golden copper panels darken over time, transforming the building into a seamless black box. The graphic pattern on a sloping square makes it feel flat. Sometimes, architecture needs to be studied up close – the high-rise turns out to have façades that lean slightly inward, and the shape is not the expected rectangle but a rhombus.
