A mapping of women in the ArkDes collection through signatures, archives, and narratives.
Frida Nerdal is an architect who runs her own practice within architecture, research, and writing, with a particular focus on women in architectural history. In her graduation project, she examined the overlooked architect Elsa Sundling, resulting in the book Arkitekt Elsa Sundling – Av lust och ohejdad vana (Balkong Förlag, 2020).
In the autumn of 2021, Nerdal was a guest researcher at ArkDes, where she studied objects in the collection related to women, trans, and non-binary individuals. The research centred on a broad mapping of women represented in the collection – from those with their own archival material, to those whose signatures appear on drawings in other collections, and those mentioned in published texts.
Nerdal’s research has informed several thematic strands in the exhibition ArkDes Collection, and has also paved the way for further investigations, such as Marisa Cortright’s research (guest researcher 2023).

About the Guest Researcher Program
Since 2021, ArkDes has hosted guest researchers for short-term residencies of three to six months, focusing on specific questions related to the ArkDes collection. The aim of the program is to introduce a wider range of perspectives into the ongoing research on the collection and to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public.
Research Outcomes
The outcomes of several guest researcher projects have shaped and enriched the exhibition ArkDes Collection, which opened in 2024. The exhibition is updated annually with new original objects, and research conducted through the Guest Researcher Program can influence both its themes and content.
Guest researchers also share their work through public events and an annual research conference hosted by ArkDes. Calls for new guest researchers are announced annually, typically during the spring semester.
