The cosmetics company Lyko runs a large warehouse in the countryside, far from the shops of the city. This is one of many logistic hubs replacing traditional shops, as more and more of our shopping moves online. We have grown used to round-the-clock browsing, speedy home deliveries, and finding inspiration from social media, much like window displays once tempted passers-by with dreams of a new coat, a stylish hat or a different life. In the early 1900s, small shops bring life to city centres. Then come the department stores, replacing many of the old storefronts. Later, suburban shopping centres draw customers away from both the department stores and the city streets.
