How can industrial landscapes become sustainable environments for the future? Reimagining Landscapes<\/em> explores how design can transform industrial environments that are no longer in use or are being decommissioned.<\/p>\n

The project focuses on spatially and culturally complex landscapes shaped by extraction and industrial activity, where operations have already been or are being decommissioned. These landscapes are characterised by interventions in the land and natural environment. They have long been inaccessible to the public and have created barriers within the landscape.<\/p>\n

At the same time, these sites contain many qualities and values that can be developed and given new roles through spatial strategies and design. The project explores how industrial landscapes in transition can take on new roles in future societies, with particular emphasis on the role of design in working with existing conditions and the specific qualities of each site.<\/p>\n

Three pre-studies were selected through an open call to explore the project’s questions through site-specific case studies. The aim is to develop knowledge that can be relevant to municipalities, property owners and other stakeholders across Sweden facing similar challenges. The results should be of national relevance and applicable to other locations across Sweden facing similar challenges.<\/p>\n

The project is part of ArkDes’ research area Transformation<\/em> and contributes to a broader focus on landscape architecture. Previous practice-based research projects within the research area include VERKET<\/em> <\/a>and RE:purpose<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Pre-studies<\/p>\n

Based on the Munsö Löten gravel quarry on Ekerö, the Laisvall mine in Arjeplog and the Makadamen quarry in Åstorp, three pre-studies explore and develop methods, design principles and future scenarios for the sustainable transformation of industrial extraction landscapes.<\/p>\n

Gro \/ Grund – Laisvall mine, Arjeplog<\/p>\n

Through the closed Laisvallgruvan in Arjeplog, the pre-study Gro \/ Grund<\/em> explores a remediated mining landscape. The pre-study examines how such a landscape can be understood, managed and further developed over time.<\/p>\n

The team takes a long-term approach to management and maintenance as design and knowledge-building practices, where remediation is understood as an ongoing process. The pre-study examines how industrial landscapes can continue to develop after the primary restoration has been carried out, and what design methods are required to strengthen their ecological, cultural heritage and spatial values over the long term.<\/p>\n

Där marken brutits – Munsö Löten, Ekerö<\/p>\n

The pre-study Där marken brutits<\/em> explores Munsö Löten, an active quarry landscape undergoing a gradual transition, as a site where industrial interventions and layers of cultural heritage coexist and are reinterpreted over time.<\/p>\n

The team draws on restoration art, cultural heritage perspectives and remediation as a design practice. The pre-study focuses on the landscape’s physical structures as carriers of biological, spatial and aesthetic values, rather than as surfaces to be restored. Through site-responsive and design-based methods, the pre-study explores how relationships between industrial traces, topography, ecology and cultural heritage can be made visible, developed and understood as valuable resources in future transformation processes.<\/p>\n

Brottet – Makadamen, Åstorp<\/p>\n

Through the former Makadamen quarry in Åstorp, the pre-study Brottet<\/em> explores how an industrial landscape can be further developed without making its traces, dependencies and history invisible. The study takes a material and landscape perspective, where remediation is understood as a design practice.<\/p>\n

The team focuses on the relationships between water, vegetation, technical systems and social needs related to accessibility, management and future use. Through site studies, conversations and design-based analysis, the study develops scenarios for the site’s future. Starting from the understanding that materials and landscapes develop through the same long-term processes, the study explores questions of what is perceived as damaged, restored or healed.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n
