An analysis of how the modern home was shaped in postwar popular media.<\/p>\n

How were ideas about the modern home communicated in postwar Sweden? The journal Hem i Sverige<\/em> (HiS) illustrates how architecture, design, and ideals were disseminated to a broad audience—with the single-family home at the center.<\/p>\n

Landscape architect and art historian Anna Lundvall investigated how architecture was communicated through Hem i Sverige<\/em> between 1944 and 1966, with a particular focus on the single-family house as a whole—building, garden, and interior. She was also a guest researcher at ArkDes in 2021 with a separate project that explored ideas and buildings in the collection relating to sustainability.<\/p>\n

By analyzing the journal alongside competitions, exhibitions, and other forms of communication, the study identified which ideals were promoted—and how. The main source material came from Hem i Sverige<\/em> and the ArkDes collection, particularly material from Lisa Bauer and photographer Sune Sundahl, whose work frequently appeared in the magazine. The research was further enriched through conversations with journalist Gunilla Lundahl, landscape architect Saga Axberg, and furniture maker Ammi Chambert, who contributed valuable perspectives.<\/p>\n

The results point to both thematic continuities and evolving ideas over time—such as Ulla Molin’s concepts of the ”urcellen” och ”allrummet”. Hem i Sverige<\/em> functioned as a collective intellectual space where editors, writers, and readers together shaped the ideal of the modern Swedish home.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

About the Guest Researcher Program<\/h2>\n \n

Since 2021, ArkDes has hosted guest researchers for short-term residencies of three to six months, focusing on specific questions related to the ArkDes collection. The aim of the program is to introduce a wider range of perspectives into the ongoing research on the collection and to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n \n

Research Outcomes<\/h2>\n \n

The outcomes of several guest researcher projects have shaped and enriched the exhibition ArkDes Collectio<\/em>n<\/a>, which opened in 2024. The exhibition is updated annually with new original objects, and research conducted through the Guest Researcher Program can influence both its themes and content.<\/p>\n

Guest researchers also share their work through public events and an annual research conference hosted by ArkDes. Calls for new guest researchers are announced annually, typically during the spring semester.<\/p>\n
