How can dialogue processes become more inviting, engaging, and inspiring? This was the question the project Augmented Dialogue<\/em>, part of ArkDes Open Call 2019, set out to answer by developing a prototype for an AR-based app. The starting point was the need for a platform where residents could easily provide input and access the municipality’s development plans.<\/p>\n

In urban planning processes, municipalities have a responsibility to consult with residents about planned changes to the physical environment. However, public consultations often occur late in the process, and the material presented can be difficult to understand. Those who attend consultation meetings are also rarely a representative cross-section of the population, and the average age tends to be relatively high.<\/p>\n

Augmented Dialogue<\/em> was led by Utopia Architects ↗<\/a> and Doberman ↗<\/a> with the goal of developing a prototype for a mobile AR app that could visualize proposed building projects on-site at a 1:1 scale. The app, which was named Stadslabbet, includes features for commenting on and discussing proposals. The aim was to promote a more inclusive and engaging dialogue process. AR technology was used as a tool to lower thresholds and communicate knowledge.<\/p>\n

The work began with a broad review through conversations and interviews with municipal employees, experts, researchers, and members of the public. Many participants highlighted that a lack of knowledge about urban planning, difficulties in understanding drawings, and a lack of follow-up made it hard for people to engage. From the professionals’ perspective, challenges included translating input and dialogue results into concrete actions. The need for tools that could better focus dialogue on issues where residents could actually influence outcomes also became clear.<\/p>\n

The next step was a workshop where participants from the public and private sectors discussed the app’s potential features and uses. This was followed by an intensive period of developing and testing the prototype. It includes three core functions: a 3D model that visualizes building projects in their intended environment, an information layer with a timeline, and a feature for users to submit proposals and feedback. The prototype was tested on Hornsbruksgatan in Stockholm, where new housing projects are planned.<\/p>\n

The project led to new collaborations. Utopia Architects adapted the app for a project in Drottninghög in Helsingborg Municipality ↗<\/a>, where residents could place urban furniture in an AR environment and provide feedback on municipal proposals. Further funding from Vinnova made it possible to continue developing the app and explore its potential in other contexts.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n
