Siegel is known for her meticulously constructed works that trace and perform systems of value, examine relationships between objects and spaces, and expose the plasticity of the moving image through sound and performance.\u00a0Her\u00a0compelling, multi-layered approach often reveals new meaning in narrativizing systems of power and economic structures as it examines the very aesthetics and mechanisms of image and sound production.<\/p>\n

A double-screen video installation composed of two alternating segments\u2014each performed and filmed in churches designed by Sigurd Lewerentz: St. Mark\u2019s in Stockholm and St. Peter\u2019s in Klippan\u2014The Silence<\/em>\u00a0considers the relationship between architecture, music, sound and the immaterial.<\/p>\n

The Silence<\/em> behaves much like a two-sided vinyl album \u2013 with each \u201cside\u201d, or video projection, performing a musical score based on the unique brick-patterned walls of the buildings, and played by the distinctive church organs Lewerentz designed for each space. The uncanny similarity between Lewerentz\u2019s brickwork and player piano scores\u2014paper rolls dotted with patterns of small, perforated absences that generate ghostly \u201cself-playing\u201d music\u2014alludes to larger existential questions of presence and absence, sound and silence, that often guide or contravene spiritual life, and thus imbue \u2018The Church\u2019 as a unique architectural space wherein such inquiries take shape.<\/p>\n

Amie Siegel\u2019s work is featured in international museum collections and widely exhibited around the globe.\u00a0The Silence\u00a0<\/em>(2022) is Siegel\u2019s first work made and exhibited in Sweden. The artist\u2019s recent works include\u00a0Asterisms<\/em>\u00a0(2021), exhibited at the 34th<\/sup>\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo Biennial, Brazil and\u00a0Bloodlines<\/em>\u00a0(2022), currently on display at the Scottish National Museum Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh and Thomas Dane Gallery, London.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n
